As you may observe from my tone, I'm really nervous about sharing this photo and showing my full dorkiness. I actually questioned whether I would publish this photo at all. It's hard to look at those black sock gaps without shuddering. I didn't realize my capris were so much shorter. Hmm. Well, a problem to solve for another day.
What I didn't know when posing for my hiking buddy was that I was deep in the middle of a wardrobe malfunction. GASP! Her term. Brilliantly coined, isn't it?
[the regular stitching line - narrow & long] + [overcast the edges - wide and long]
= Sewing construction & edge finishing for knits
It keeps raw edges together, rather than flopping about and 2 lines of stitching offers much better protection and securing at stressed seams.
I've worn these capris several times. No issues.
On my hike to Berkley Camp at Sunrise on Mount Rainier, the stitching broke. Yes, broke! I nearly flashed the world with my crazy day-of-the-week under roos. Unacceptable.
The first photo was taken at half way through the first leg. That's the first 1/4 of our 11 mile hike, so the stitching gave way roughly 2.75 miles in. That means I had 8.25 miles left to hike with the broken stitching. Lemme tell ya, I was nervous. But I feigned confidence and ignored it.
This is in the front, ~ 6" up center front from where the leg seams meet the crotch curve. If you're trying to compare your leggings or pants to mine, be advised that I am comparatively very short on the front crotch curve.
This appears to be an area where, as I move, I pull and stress the garment. I find that very interesting, because I have not broken stitching there before.
I shall investigate some of my girdle like bike shorts to see how they handle stress at those points before proceeding.
As you can see , that 2nd row of stitching came in really handy. Based on this experience, for my garments it's a requirement not a nice to have.
