Art Yarn: Learning to Spin Cocoons

Learning to Spin Cocoons from Gwen Gyldenege on Vimeo.

I’m trying to figure out ways to embed videos in my blog, but for the time being, here’s one on how I turned some fiber into art yarn with cocoons. I’m a little goofy, but I hope I make you laugh, inspire you to create something, or further intrigue you with my creations of handspun & knitwear.

Everywhere I knit or spin, I find people who are fascinated or envious of the items I create.  I have knit for a few clients in 2010 to explore the process and see if it changed my interest in or zest for knitting/spinning.  But it’s given me more joy than I could have imagined!  So, it’s time for me to open up an online shop again and take orders.  As of today, I am now taking custom orders for handspun yarn and knitwear.  I’m very excited to offer you a chance to own one of my fun and functional items.  I choose fibers and yarns to suit the finished product.  This means that I will create a pair of fingerless gloves out of a colorful or wild yarn in a simple design so that the yarn get’s all the love and attention.

I also have a lovely selection of knitwear items which I will be offering online soon.  Before I do that, I’m exploring options for including a shopping cart here on my blog.  This will allow me to simplify, customize and reduce my costs.  I used to sell on Etsy, but found that I prefer to land on a single site when shopping or exploring an artist rather than have you jump all over the place.  It’s less confusing for both the artist and the collector!  Look for some changes in the next month or so.

The fingerless mitts above are a work in progress (WIP) for a client.  The fiber was chosen by the client which I then spun into yarn and knit into the fingerless mitts she requested.
  • Fiber:  Merino
  • Dyer: Spinning Awesome Good
  • Colorway: The Forest Has a Long Memory
  • Yarn:  handspun 2-ply super bulky, ~ 37 yards of 4 oz.
  • Pattern: Improvised fingerless mitts based on quantity of yarn available vs. needle size vs. minimum length needed to fit comfortably at both wrist, knuckles, and thumb
  • Effort to date: 2.5 hours to spin the yarn.  5 hours knitting time (~1 hour left) over 5 days.
