Art Sharing Challenge, Day 3: Polymer Sculptures

2/19/2015

For day 3, I'm sharing my sculpture. I'm showing you my latest sculptures, assemblage, and also show you on of my first ever sculptures done while still in elementary school.

Polymer Sculpture in Assemblage 2014

I love taking my art to a new level. One really fun way to do that with sculpture is to include it as part of an assemblage.  I love to paint and invite lots of playful colors to the party and assemblage enables me to paint and sculpt. Often, I rarely know what will happen with a sculpture or a scene/frame until much later. Usually, each ends up being done at separate times, then later assembled and pulled together for a uniform looking piece.  The 2 pieces directly below, "Oh! I. Am. Enough." and "Zen Froggie" are two of my most recent assemblages.

Ganesh, the remover of obstacles, is a deity that I love to sculpt. He very much inspires my work and I keep a statue of him among my art supplies. In 2013, I sculpted my first Ganesh. In 2014, I invited his energy into my workspace to inspire more variations of him, or rather to allow me to sculpt him in action. Such a playful and most helpful deity! Ganesh you honor me.

Little Altars 2013

In 2013, my amazing and really inspiring mom created Little Altars.  Here are a few of my polymer sculptures from that art exchange project. I had so much fun creating all of these. What a launching pad for my sculpture and also an excellent way to discover my style of sculpture.

My 2nd Return to Sculpting and Assemblage 2012

In 2012, around the time of Pass the Paper, a shared and build-upon art project with the PMC Guild, and a few classes, I felt inspired to sculpt again. With the exception of Tweet (upper left) and the purple elf (lower right), all the pieces have been sold or are with their owner as part of an art project.

The Box Project 2005 - 2006

The very first art exchange I participated in was called the Box Project. Each artist started with a take out box made in fabric & timtex, then every successive artist embellished the box a bit further. They got wilder and wilder the further they were passed. It was a very freeing experience. Very few rules. We were allowed to place a desired theme around our box. Mine was peace. "But no gawdy peace signs, you guys!" I said to a group of former hippies. Well, that went over like a lead balloon. They poked fun at me through out the project. Oh I was disgusted with those peace signs. How ugly.  And isn't it rather poignant that my current favorite pants are littered with Bright Gawdy Peace signs and electric tie-dye?

My first return to sculpture from when I was a kid (decades later) was on the box project. I really get inspired with a little boost of what another artist started on an exchange project. They're small bits, and you're contributing just a wee bit. So, wee sized I went. I made several faeries for one box and a Gnome with his trunk hitching a ride with a sign that read "Gnome Sweet Gnome".  I have no idea how I came up with these ideas, they just came to me and I followed my nose. Truly divine guidance and assistance was with me the whole time.  I have yet to work this small again. But I will!

My First Sculptures 1980 - 1990

I began sculpting with Fimo as a kid. I remember how new an art supply it was.  There were very few books on the market to show you how to sculpt.  I was inspired by one and created this little angel coloring.  She has her own Crayola box of 16, several crayons strewn about, marks on the page ready to be colored in, and is fully equipped with matching halo and outfit.  Can you believe I was younger than 10 when I made this? My mom could see how talented I was.  I however made this and thought it wasn't all that novel, and definitely not good enough quality because it didn't exceed calliber of the book. Sheesh! How hard I was on myself. I expected to be a master instantaneously. Well, little me, you were amazing. Honor that.
