Me Made May 2014: Travel Clothing for Moab and SLC

5/13/2014

Comments

I'm so excited to share with you my first half of how I particpated in Me Made May 2014.  I had the great fortune to make 2 trips this month.  The first trip was to visit dear friends in Salt Lake City, UT.  Then together we travelled to Moab where we camped at Moab Under Canvas and explored Arches National Park.  The second trip, which I will share in a separate post, was to San Francisco, CA.

Packing for a Trip

Packing can be a challenge because you haven't your full closet with you to choose from as a whim hits. So, how do you plan for spontaneity while still keeping your suitcase light?  A few options I chose are:
  • 1 shirt per day (or less - and I could have done 2 shirts less than I brought)
  • 1 pair of PJ's for inside, 1 set of really warm clothing for camping.
(If I was camping in the Pacific NW, I would have needed many more layers and wool to stay warm, but the desert really held onto the heat and the dryness made a big difference in staying warm at night)
  • 1 pair of pants per 3 days (or more)
  • Wear my heaviest shoes on the plane (saves suitcase space)
  • Layout all possibly combos first, then pair down until you reach the above guidelines.

Antelope Island, Utah

For my first day, I put on a shirt I made years ago. This shirt doesn't have a pattern, I copied a RTW top that was made entirely of knits.  When I made my version, I made it with quiliting cotton in the center front & back, but knit and woven netting on the side. It's really fun because the sides are bright neon pink under red netting. That makes for a very bold effect. I finished it off with a tiny strip of knit that rolls upon itself.  You will notice I'm wearing the same pants in a photo at arches near the bottom of this post.
Antelope Island is a fascinating place right on The Great Salt Lake. It's funny, the name is never said without "The Great" in front of it.  The island is drivable, many miles.  It has herds and herds of buffalo, antelope, jack rabbits, birds galore (it's a migration stopping ground), and a shit ton of bugs. Oh my god. The only bad part about visiting was that within 30 seconds of being outside the car, we were coated in these bugs that bit. I have experienced multitudes of bugs, but this was the worst. So, we jumped back in the car and drove around to enjoy the vast and glorious views and the wildlife. Seeing buffalo hang out on the dried up salt flats was so cool. Big dudes those buffalo. Quite the bird perch.

PJ's

I mentioned 1 pair of PJ's for inside, one for out.  The only pair I ever wore the entire time I was in Utah, including our night camping in a Tepee, were my first yoga pants.  I need to make more of these. Comfortable, forgiving, the perfect "chill out" pant.

Moab and Arches

I have never been to the desert.  A former friend had travelled to photograph the desert when it was in bloom and I was instantly fascinated.  I knew one day I would be photographing the desert in bloom. FLOWERS! ... IN! The! Desert!!!

Arches was a blast!  Above, you'll see me, wearing my first sports bra while whispering silliness to the 3 gossips.  Below is one of the many, many, many different kinds of desert wildflowers I found and me grabbing hold of "balanced rock".

Moab under Canvas just opened in April 2014 and we jumped in on Glamping which is totally the thing, you know.  The cots were super comfy (seriously!), I could peek out the opening and look at the stars as I fell asleep. It was lovely. They even had showers & bathrooms. So we got to wash the stank off.

I had a really lovely time with my friends. I felt deeply grateful I had chosen to make the trip, enjoy the company of good friends and spend the money (scary!).   We loved taking silly pictures too!

Do you see how I wore the same pants throughout the hike as well as on my first day in the beginning?
