Sewing Basics: Using Leftover Fabric to Make Panties of Jalie 3351 Swim Shorts

I had just enough fabric left over from my Sweetheart Top to make 2 pair of panties. Since the Jalie Swim Shorts I made were so stinkin comfortable, I thought I'd try making the panty briefs from that pattern as a pair of basic panties. The knit fabric is so comfy you don't even know you're wearing it! So why not make something that will lay next to your skin out of it?

These were really easy to sew up. Even though I ran out of space to cut the front as a single piece.  Note the seam at the front crotch, this is an extra seam not in the pattern. That part worked out just fine. Plus, the whole pattern was super quick to make.

After trying them on, and the 3 pairs of past panties I've made, I can see that my front thigh protrudes far enough that I need a higher leg than most patterns allow.  In many ways, it seems like I have a tiny side seam and a french cut leg opening. In line with this, I have found that I could take out as much as 3/4" - 1" in a dart shape pinched at the side seam. It is what leads me to believe that raising the height of the leg is the best plan.

I also usually have to narrow the width of the crotch area. Most patterns, Kwik Sew especially, are quite wide. Who wants to be fussing with folds of fabric where your legs join your body under your clothes all day? Not me!

I'm really glad I made the pattern because I see this will be a great option for panties once I complete the further alterations I need. I may also consider adapting the Jalie 971 Competition swim suit pattern leg opening to the swim short briefs to make the ideal panty for my body shape.

I cut a 2nd pair of panties in this same fabric using Jan Bones Smoothie Pantie. Once that is complete, I'll share the results of it too. I plan to raise the leg on it before I sew based on what I see I need from the American Hero pair I made.
