Travelling with Art Supplies: DIY Portable Paint Palette

10/15/2014

After a recent vacation, I am interested to find ways to efficiently and lightly pack plenty of art supplies and be able to carry them on an airplane.  I'm also taking Mermaid Circus, an online class with Jane Davenport and Teesha Moore.  Because I've watched several of Jane's other class previews on YouTube, their recommendation engine brought up Jane's video, Peerless Watercolour Palette.

I've never used peerless, only Twinkle H2O's (which I LOVE ), and Daniel Smith's water colors in tubes. Both photos above show a portion of the watercolors and art supplies I took in my carry-on baggage on a recent trip.  After lugging these around, I find these paper thin water colors of peerless fascinating and exciting.

Jane's approach to making them portable inspiring.  Even for the local artist who travels to the sea near their home or to the park to paint, this will free up weight and allow your mind to focus on creating.
Most of the time, I love the recommendations that follow a video.  This time, YouTube hit a winner - well, that's because the people who created and posted their videos also used key words and descriptions that nicely tied into Jane's portable palette video.  Lovely, I'm on the same wavelenth.  I don't have to search obscurely, because many artists are seeking ways to make their own portable palette.

The next video recommended was the Midori Small Watercolor Palette.  There's a cute little book/pad that is shown in the beginning. Damn! I had one and got rid of it because I lost the pen.  I KNEW that thing could have another use, but I'm trying to keep clutter to a minimum and that was something I thought could go. Oh well. Noting for future reference.  The Midori video shows using old eyeshadow cups for paint and one of those floss holders. GENIUS!
_The last video I caught from the recommendation engine is the Altoids paint set.  The kicker here is the guy put a piece of palette paper or the like, goo'd up with paint from tubes, then let it dry. Uh, hello perfect! While I might not use all of his approach, this was rather enlightening. I didn't paint while I was travelling because it was a little too much effort and well, we were too busy drinking coffee and picking apples.
I feel like I'm on the verge of creating & inventing some really fun ways to be a travelling artist. This is really exciting, because as you know, I don't like to be bored.  Being able to carry lots of art supplies, without all the weight means I can begin to plan for travel without checking baggage and go anywhere I dream. That opens up miles of opportunity.

My engineering mind is delighted to solve the challenge of portable art supplies constrained by weight, space, liquid TSA restrictions and having lots of supplies at hand.  My artist heart is delighted that I will be able to create when the muse arrives. And frankly, she's built a bunk bed in my heart where art camp is visited daily.
